The monument complex of the Valldemossa Charterhouse has attracted illustrious characters from all over the world throughout its history, principal among whom are Chopin and his companion George Sand. It is one of the region’s main attractions and a popular favourite among tourists to the island.

The complex originated in the time of Mallorca’s King James II, who chose this exceptional spot to build a palace for his son Sancho. In 1399 King Martin “the Humane” granted all the royal possessions of Valldemossa to the Carthusian monks. They founded the Charterhouse and lived there until 1835, when it was transferred into private ownership due to mortmain prohibition.

A visit to the complex includes the church, the cloister and the old Carthusian pharmacy. You can also visit the gardens and the Prior’s Cell, where you can view artefacts both from the time of the monks and the visit of Chopin and George Sand.
