Platja de Palma is the biggest piece of coast of the capital of the Balearic archipelago (4,6 kilometres long, divided into 15 beaches), situated 14 kilometres east from this town, although the last part belongs to the municipality of Llucmajor.

The name of Platja de Palma was established by sociedad Mar de Mallorca, which used to exploit the beach (sun loungers, umbrellas, bars and refreshment stalls), to unify by one name Cala Estància, Can Pastilla and s’Arenal.

The coast has fine-grained sand and gentle slope, which makes bathing easier for small children. The nearest port facilities are located at Club Nàutic s’Arenal, at 2,5 nautical miles toward west.

The natural vegetation of the dunes ecosystem which retains the sand was destructed and nearly disappeared in 1989. therefore 400.000 tons of sand where introduced to give the beach the spectacular present dimensions.

Parallel to the coast there is the biggest concentration of hotels in Majorca and one of the most importants in the Mediterranean area. Between 1960 and 1968 the biggest part of these hotels were built and at the end of the 20th century the coastline was redesigned, with palms along a new promenade and road traffic was limited.
