The Testudo hermanni is a medium-sized tortoise – with a shell up to 27 cm long in the females, which are larger than the males – with yellow and black colouring.

They can be found scattered around the islands of Mallorca and Menorca. On Mallorca, they are present on most of the island, with the exception of the Tramuntana mountain range. On Menorca, they can also be found all over the island, although there are fewer specimens near the cities of Maó and Ciutadella due to urban pressures.

They inhabits hill, slopes and dunes with vegetation characteristic of the Mediterranean region, like pine trees, wild olive trees and mastic trees. They mainly feed on leaves, fruit and sometimes invertebrates. They are active during the months of spring, summer and part of autumn but hibernate in the cold winter months.
