LOCATION

The Hams Caves were discovered by the speleologist and pioneer of tourism, Pedro Caldentey Santandreu (1886 – 1950) on March 2nd 1905 while he was excavating in search of onyx, a valued rock that was to be found in plenty in this region.

The Hams Caves were discovered by the speleologist and pioneer of tourism, Pedro Caldentey Santandreu (1886 – 1950) on March 2nd 1905 while he was excavating in search of onyx, a valued rock that was to be found in plenty in this region.
In 1912, concerned by the effect that carbide light was having on the cave, he thought up what, for his times, was a great technological and ecological invention: One of the first electrical – artistic installations in the in the world. Using a windmill, with a waterfall, a turbine and a tank, he generated 16 hours of electrical current for visiting the cave and wonderful electrical lighting.
The present electrical system dates from 1953 and is highlighted by the artistic lighting, magic in light and colour by Lorenzo Caldentey, son of the discovered.
